Escritor estadounidense. Experimentó brevemente la vida de los campamentos mineros de California antes de ser editor de periódicos y escritor. Sus obras, precursoras de la escuela que cultiva el color local en la narrativa estadounidense, incluyen los cuentos "The Luck of Roaring Camp [La fortuna del Roaring Camp] (1868) y "Los proscritos de Poker Flat (1869), el poema The Heathen Chinee [El chino pagano] (1870), y la obra teatral Ah Sin (1877; con Mark Twain). Estos escritos le granjearon fama internacional en una época en que el Oeste era un tema popular. En la década de 1870, la calidad de sus obras decayó. Harte aceptó consulados en Europa y no regresó jamás.
